Honesty is still the best policy

This is a true story. It has now been updated so that the whole truth prevails...

About 3 weeks back, a prospect wrote me asking about small size Big Eyes Scrump. He had been recommended to UFO Catch of the Day, so he actually came to the right place as we are well stocked in BE Scrumps; see pix below.

As a basis to negotiate a better deal, this prospect had given me a link to check out a similar item going at a slightly lower price. Since we can't deal below cost for BE Scrump, and he had hit on a great find, I suggested that he should pursue it and mentioned how to check the item.

It has come to light that the seller had packed the wrong item and mailed it. The item is now being replaced and we have a happy ending to this story. I applaud the seller's quick action and responsible attitude.

At UFO Catch of the Day, we believe in total transparency and honesty. Where on earth would you find someone asking a prospect to buy from a competitor and offering free advice? At the same time, we are highly encouraged that other sellers are equally honorable, such that together we can create a fair marketplace that will benefit our customers.

P.S. Instead of removing this post as the truth has come to light, I have done the more responsible thing of updating it. Censorship is a strange animal, and in blogsphere we believe everyone should strive for transparency and accuracy, and take responsibility for what is being put out. A lesson in pricing?

Picture this -- You enter a shop, see an item you like and you check the price tag. It reads: "U.P. $29.90". When you see "U.P.", what comes to mind? "Usual Price"? Correct?

Dead wrong! By the time you finish reading this slightly tongue-in-cheek article, you'd not be amused why there is always a Catch in pricing...

According to the Dept of Exorbitance, Avarice & Ripoff, "U.P." means Unfair Practice in UFO parlance. It is about charging an Unfavorable Price to an Unsuspecting Person or one with an Unusually-deep Pocket.

It is noteworthy that "U.P." without the periods read as "UP", which literally means the price has been jacked UP. This is especially significant in the presence of a discount, where the intended effect is to portray a good deal. This manner of price setting is totally unacceptable, and hopefully you have not been a victim.

At UFO Catch of the Day, we list the "U.P." for each item to reflect the nominal price seen in the market. This is not and will never be the price we sell the item. Our prices give you fair value -- a fact that our customers will readily attest to -- and are totally unrelated to "U.P." numbers.

Our prices won't hurt your pocket, because we strive for prices to be Consistent, Hip, Equitable, Appealing and Pocket-friendly. All our prices may not be the lowest in town all the time, but most times we are second to none, except in some cases where a deliberate clearance is taking place.

It is our sincere hope that customers be aware before buying is contemplated. Caveat emptor!

1. UFO Catch of the Day's $Hongbao $pecial will start on 20th Feb and run for 10 consecutive days. All purchases made during this period will qualify for rewards if specific criteria is met.
2. When your purchase exceeds the first S$20 threshold, you will be rewarded with a 10% discount.
3. When your purchase exceeds the next S$20 threshold, you will get a S$10 hongbao. Yes, this is not a misprint -- it's a S$10 credit for your next purchase! However, any purchase which utilizes the hongbao credit does not qualify for further rewards.

There has been some feedback that the $Mystery $pecial 2 game looks hard to play due to complicated play instructions. To get you started quickly, simplified Play Guidelines have been provided here. However, should there be any confusion or need for further clarity, the Play Instructions shall prevail.

A variation of play called $pot Bonu$ will now be added to the game board. This lets you quickly zoom into specific $uper Deal$ that you are looking for. Details of such $uper Deal$ will be given below the game board.

Play Guidelines
The simplified instructions below explain how you should play the $Mystery $pecial 2 game, looking for regular $uper Deal$ and sometimes $pot Bonu$.

Regular Play
1. Move your mouse cursor over the UFO items on the game board, one at a time in any order you like.
2. When you pause at an item, it's description and price will be shown. If one of the $uper Deal$ is hiding here, a "** Congrat$ You can buy ..." message will also show to alert you of this prize.
3. If you decide the prize and the item you stopped at are both what you want, click on that item. An Email message will pop up; fill in your name and mobile number and click Send.
4. Wait for a confirmation reply from UFO Catch of the Day that tells you how to complete the purchase. Immediately reserve the prize by paying for the clicked item via ATM or bank transfer.
5. UFO Catch of the Day will make arrangements with you on how to collect the prize and make final payment.

$pot Bonu$ Play
1. When you see this pic on the left on the game board, it means $pot Bonu$ is in play. Sometimes, more than one of this item will show up on the game board.

Welcome to the $Mystery $pecial 2 game. This is part of a series of out-of-this-world promotions created especially for you, discerning shoppers who choose to stay with UFO Catch of the Day. There will be lots of excitement, thrills and spills, and definitely lots of fun while you play this game to buy what you want at prices that can be unbelievable.

Game Concept
$Mystery $pecial 2 is a game of Hide n $eek -- we hide the $uper Deal$ and you find them as quick as you can. If you have been following the teasers, you'd have a good idea of some of the $uper Deal$ to expect; do look out for other great deals as well that will be revealed as the game progresses. In case you are new here, go to the first teaser to get warmed up.

Game Details
This Hide n $eek game will be fully explained below. Do not skip any of the sections as you will need to understand everything to play it correctly.

Read this first
1. Every participant will need a valid Email address. This will be used to claim the $uper Deal$ found and also for subsequent follow-ups to finalize and complete the purchases.
2. Due to inherent latency of the Internet, Emails sent by participants may not arrive in our Inbox based on the time they were sent. All incoming Emails will be judged by their Gmail timestamps as to which is deemed to have arrived earliest.
3. Successful participants will be asked to put up deposits to reserve the $uper Deal$ they have won. They have 24 hours to do this before they lose their claim on the prizes.
4. The tagboard will be the primary channel for posting game updates and hints. New blog posts may appear for more elaborate updates and to introduce more $uper Deal$. Participants should refresh their browser views regularly to see how the game is progressing. Participants can also opt to follow UFO Catch of the Day on their browser.
5. Any participant who has no intention nor commitment to follow through with a purchase should refrain from playing the game. Any comments made by such a participant on the tagboard during game play will be ignored and may be deleted.

How to play
1. You will be shown a game board with many UFO items on it that have been priced attractively. Hidden behind some of these items are the $uper Deal$, which appear at random. At any one time, 1 or more $uper Deal$ may be hidden.
2. To find the $upser Deal$, move your mouse cursor over each item to check its description. You will be shown the Item Code and price; in case one of the $uper Deal$ is hiding behind that item, a special message will also be shown to describe the prize won.
3. Click on the item to claim your prize. Your Email program will run and open a prepared message; fill in your name and mobile number and hit the Send button.
4. Wait for a confirmation Email from UFO Catch of the Day that explains how to reserve the prize with a deposit via ATM/bank transfer. Once the deposit is made, reply the confirmation Email to advice on the deposit transaction reference code and amount.
5. As there can be more than one participant claiming a prize (especially HOT items like Big Eyes Scrump ;-), the fastest one that completes the deposit and advice will be deemed the eventual winner for that prize. In such instances, all other participants claiming that same prize will have their deposits promptly refunded.

Fine points to note
1. This game is based on a purchase-with-purchase concept. To enjoy the fantastic price offers on $uper Deal$, you are required to buy the item you clicked on when claiming the prize won. As the prices of all items on the game board have been marked down, you are actually enjoying double price savings.
2. Before you claim any prize by clicking, you should check on all items using their Item Codes to know what you are buying.
3. The deposit amount will be based on the price of the item you clicked on when claiming a prize.
4. Member Rewards will be temporarily suspended for purchases made in the $Mystery $pecial 2 game.

Duration of game
1. The $Mystery $pecial 2 game will run for 2 weeks, from 22nd Jan to 5th Feb.
2. In case all the $uper Deal$ have been claimed before 5th Feb, the game will end at this earlier date.
3. As the game may not run 24/7, refer to the tagboard to check whether the game is in play.
